Collection (1835-1886), consisting of typewritten pages, plats, and photocopies of letters, includes a family chart tracing the Cumming, Richards, and Alley family trees, notes, and transcriptions of conveyances and other property records and legal documents, a slave list, correspondence, newspaper articles, and estate records. Correspondence includes letters (1847, 1854, 1855) from Thomas John Cumming to his brother George Alexander Cumming concerning a rigging business with John Torrent, the illness of Frederica Cumming (wife of Thomas John Cumming), the family's move to a farm near Townville in Anderson District (S.C.), and U.S. economic conditions; letters (1866) from Raymon[d] Alley to Frederick Charles Cumming and William Joseph Cumming regarding their share of Thomas John Cumming's estate; and a letter (1886 Sept. 12) from A.R. Alley to William Joseph Cumming concerning Thomas John Cumming's estate and conditions in Charleston (S.C.) after the earthquake. Newspaper articles include an article (1861 Dec. 13) from the Charleston Post about the great fire of December 11 and 12 in Charleston (S.C.); and an article (1886 Sept. 1) from the News and Courier concerning the Charleston earthquake.
